Strike Averted?

Ontario college students may have narrowly averted a teachers’ strike this year.

After a nail-biter of a vote last night, 51.25 per cent of teachers voted in favour of the colleges’ latest offer.

This result, however, remains unofficial until it is reviewed by the Ontario Labour Relations Board.

If it does get accepted, the union will sign a contract that gives them 5.9 per cent more in salary increases over three years.

The strike date is set for Feb. 17.

If the offer is rejected, the union will determine a new strike date and call on colleges to return to the bargaining table, and failing that, the union will push for arbitration.

The colleges stay firm with their offer.

Nothing more.
